Questions to ask when choosing a cattery

Choosing a boarding cattery

It's important to visit the cattery you're considering using to board your cat and to ask sufficient questions so that, even though it may have been recommended by friends or family, you are confident that your cat will be given the best possible care whilst you are away. Before visiting check with the cattery staff the best time to visit so that you don't turn up at feeding or morning cleaning times when everyone is very busy. This will ensure that the cattery staff have time to show you round and to answer your questions. At Paws 'n' Claws you don't need to ring to arrange a visit ... just come along any time between 11.00am and 3.00pm and we'll be glad to show you round and answer questions.

Ask sufficient questions to satisfy your concerns regarding the following :

  • Is the boarding licence from local council up to date?
  • What are the vaccination requirements?
  • What are the feeding arrangements?
  • Can you bring beds, bedding and toys?
  • Medication - how is this monitored?
  • What heating is provided?
  • Which disinfectants are used and what are the cleaning procedures?
  • What are the cattery delivery and collection times?
  • What are the fees?
  • Is there availability during peak boarding seasons?
  • What are the staffing levels and do they have an employers insurance liability certificate?
  • Is grooming available?
  • Are there laundry facilities?
  • Administration - what information is recorded about you and your pet? it should include the following:
    • your name and address and phone numbers
    • contact details while you are away
    • your pets details - breed, age, medical history, medication, vaccination record, temperament
    • vets details
    • feeding requirements

Visit the following areas:

  • the cattery .....  which should have cats in!
  • kitchen/food preparation and storage area
  • grooming room
  • laundry and washing up facilities
  • reception/office area

Things to look out for:

  • the attitude of the staff
  • the cleanliness of all areas
  • the standard of security - is there a second security barrier everywhere to prevent escape?
  • full height sneeze barriers between chalets
  • the quality lighting and ventilation
  • heating equipment installed
  • the standard of maintenance

There's lots to ask about and to see on a visit to a cattery and so allow yourself plenty of time. If you decide to book after your visit please do so well in advance to avoid disappointment .... good catteries get booked up early at peak season times.
